Interview with Masahiko Sato : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Masahiko Sato : The communication between family member. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Masahiko Sato : The keyword for I3-House "molding at the top of the hill" design was the natural features of the site itself, they are "wind" and "cliff" .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Masahiko Sato : To be able to do similar work outside japan. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Masahiko Sato : 4 months. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Masahiko Sato : Its just happen and born naturally as a product of my way of thinking. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Masahiko Sato : The site surrounded by elementary , junior high schools and parks around it, eventhough the site is facing public road it is surprisingly a quiet place to live. In addition, typoons are often occurred in Miyazaki, also annual rainfall here is recorded to be relatively high compared to other areas in the country .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Masahiko Sato : No .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Masahiko Sato : I3-House「Modeling on the hill」was planned in the residential area at the top of the hill of Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Masahiko Sato : The sense of openness in living room and the preservation of conventional japanese wood construction. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Masahiko Sato : No .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Masahiko Sato : It has important role especially in design development to supervision phase. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Masahiko Sato : As we proceed with the design, it was necessary to consider legal restrictions and regulation regarding the cliff on southeast part, and also to take account for wind loads from sea direction. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Masahiko Sato : We won some a bronze and silver award last year so we are feel very confident and motivated to achieve higher prize this year as our goal. .
