Ancestor House
The Ancestor House is a hotel formed by renovating a family mansion built in 1898 in Zhouwujie Village, China. The property is a traditional courtyard dwelling with three halls, two wings and four internal courtyards. The Huizhou-style facade and walls were repaired and reinforced with a steel and concrete structure. Damaged timber frames were rebuilt to match the original form, while sound beams and stone plinths were kept. Removed grey tiles were reused for paving and roof details. A glass screen wall brings daylight into the lobby. The hotel offers 14 rooms.
Ancestor House Hotel by Chen Xiao and Chen Dilong was recognized as a grand representation of architectural design by the A' Design Award. Ancestor House Hotel received the Iron A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2020. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is a highly prestigious, international, juried design competition that celebrates superior design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
