Sprout
Sprout is a bicycle produced by three-dimensional printing. The frame is shaped through topology optimization, which places material only where it is needed and lowers the total amount used. Static stress analysis with the finite element method verifies the stability of the frame structure. The final model is printed in high density nylon. The bicycle measures 1630 mm in length, 600 mm in width and 832 mm in height. Printing removes the need for costly molds, so each frame can follow an individual design.
Sprout 3D Printed Bicycle by JunXiang Cheng was selected as a grand example of industrial design by the A' Design Awards. Sprout 3D Printed Bicycle won the Iron A' Design Award in 3D Printed Forms and Products Design in 2022. The A' 3D Printed Forms and Products Design Award is an international, juried, academic and meritocratic design recognition program that rewards outstanding design of products designed and realized with latest technologies, 3D printed products, prosthetics, architectural models, jewelry, furniture, automotive parts, fashion accessories, sculptures and more.
