The Big Roof
The Big Roof is a fire station in Keelung, Taiwan, a mountainous and rainy city. The design adapts the local mountain house style, so the building reads as a landmark and still blends into the terrain. A large sloping roof forms a new layer over the mountain surface. Balconies and openings create sheltered spaces between the landscape and the building. These spaces add depth, reduce direct sunlight in summer and allow natural ventilation. A scenic path beside the fire station leads to the park and the surrounding landscape.
The Big Roof Fire Station by Chuan-Chih Chang has been selected as an outstanding example of architectural design by the A' Design Award. The Big Roof Fire Station received the Iron A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2023. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, juried, academic and meritocratic design prize that rewards superior design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
