Chinese Sports
Chinese Sports is a series of five illustrations about traditional Chinese sports. The set depicts acrobatics, cuju, equestrian sports, the five animal exercises and throwing. Each illustration places its sport within the historical period in which the sport was popular, so the images combine a sense of history with a sense of movement. The sketches were drawn in pencil, then scanned and completed with digital painting software. The series was released online to help the public learn about the cultural meaning of these traditional sports.
Chinese Sports Illustration by Yanliu Cui was identified as an outstanding representation of communication design by the A' Design Award & Competition. Chinese Sports Illustration won the Bronze A' Design Award in Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design in 2023. The A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award is an international, jury-voted, fair and ethical design recognition program that celebrates exceptional design of logos, posters, infographics, brochures, packaging designs, business cards, book covers, billboards and more.
