The Lighthouse of Wishes
The Lighthouse of Wishes is an art installation built on the coastline of the Aranya Community in Beidaihe, Hebei Province, China. The structure stands 12 metres tall and rests on a steel skeleton with a heavy steel base plate, so no foundation had to be dug into the sand. The facade is made of translucent polycarbonate panels, painted by members of the public with their wishes for the new year. Daylight passes between the inclined layers by day, while internal lighting reveals 204 painted panels at night. The steel and the panels can be recycled or reused.
The Lighthouse of Wishes Art Installation by QiRui Ma has been identified as a creative illustration of communication design by the A' Design Awards. The Lighthouse of Wishes Art Installation earned the Golden A' Design Award in Fine Arts and Art Installation Design in 2024. The A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award is an international, juried, academic and meritocratic design award which rewards outstanding design of sculptures, paintings, installations, photographs, drawings, mixed media works, ceramics, art objects, craftworks and more.
