ARTificial
ARTificial is an autonomous painting robot that creates art with almost no human authorship. A generative adversarial network produces a new portrait, and a novel algorithm converts the digital image into coordinates. An industrial robot then paints the portrait on canvas with acrylic. After two buttons are pressed, the machine selects a random motif, takes paint, cleans the brush and works until the artwork is finished. A foundation of wood, concrete and steel supports safe operation. The installation questions whether art creation belongs only to intelligent beings.
ARTificial Autonomous Robot by Titus Ebbecke has been highlighted as a grand example of service design by the A' Design Award & Competition. ARTificial Autonomous Robot was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Robotics, Automaton and Automation Design in 2020. The A' Robotics, Automaton and Automation Design Award is a highly prestigious, international, juried design award that honors superior design of industrial robots, medical robots, agricultural robots, domestic robots, autonomous vehicles, humanoid robots, telepresence robots, underwater robots and more.
