House for Parents
House for Parents is a residence on Amami-Oshima Island, an area with a severe subtropical climate and frequent typhoons. A large rectangular roof is supported by a steel framework structure with a four meter span. The roof creates a cool and shaded interior, similar to the space under large trees. The concrete walls stand independently from the roof structure, so the floor plan is free from restrictions caused by columns. Projecting concrete walls extend the common areas outward toward the surrounding island landscape.
House for Parents Residence by Masakatsu Matsuyama has been selected as an innovative example of architectural design by the A' Design Awards. House for Parents Residence won the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2020. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is a highly prestigious, international, juried design competition that rewards exceptional design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
